Read — Revisit Kolbert on Darwin
Go back to the Kolbert excerpt from March 18 — reread the parts about Darwin and the question of whether humans are “inside” or “outside” nature. You’ve spent a week thinking about animal intelligence now, so this should read differently than it did the first time.

Write — The De Waal / Kolbert Connection
De Waal says scientists refused to believe animals could think because it would be inconvenient. Kolbert shows Darwin couldn’t quite reckon with human-caused extinction because it would undermine his own theory. What’s the connection? Write a short response.
